Mario Šain’s book takes readers on a journey to a turbulent period in European history, exploring the position of the Serbian-Orthodox minority in the Habsburg Monarchy. After the “Great Migration” of 1690, the Orthodox faced significant challenges in preserving their religious and cultural identity within the Habsburg Empire. The book examines the strategies they used to navigate political, social, and religious pressures, showcasing their resilience and adaptability. Additionally, it explores the security dynamics of their minority status. By incorporating new archival materials and analyzing Serbian and international historiography, it offers fresh macro and microhistorical perspectives.
