What can fiction tell us about the world that journalism and science
cannot? This simple, vast question is the starting-point for an
interrogation of the relationship between literary fiction and society’s
dramatic transformation in South Africa and Argentina over the past two
three decades. The resulting discursive text borders on both journalism
and literature, incorporating reportage, essay and memoir.
Oscar Hemer (b. 1954) is a writer of fiction and nonfiction, and a senior
lecturer at Malmö University, Sweden. He holds a Ph. D. In Social
Anthropology from the University of Oslo, Norway.
