This book explores the strategy of the European Union in the
democratisation processes of Serbia and Croatia in the years 2000 – 2005.
It argues that the EU intervention turned the democratization processes
into Europeanisation processes, which featured the promotion of societal
participation, the regional approach and the conditionality principle as
their constitutive elements. In examining the EU’s choice of actors
targeted and analysing the issue areas promoted by its policy, the study
explores the implementation of concepts of societal participation and
challenges the proclamation of civil society promotion being an
indispensable part of the EU’s democratisation agenda for Serbia and Croatia.
