Beschreibung

This volume is a product of empirical rich and theoretically thought
generating material collected over a one year field research undertaken in
2001 – 2002, in the Kenyan Rift Valley. Focusing on the strategies of
women coping with displacement and trying to make their new places their
home, Dr. Achieng‘ adopts a multi-local, agency and actor-centred approach
and thus brilliantly shows how, by economic and social networking and by
creating new sets of meaning, these women reconstruct and reconnect the
places they were driven from, to the places they now live and work in.

A former programmes manager at the Council for the Development of Social
Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dr. Achieng‘ is currently in charge
of developing the academic and research components of the sociology
section of the School of Social Sciences, Monash South Africa
