Karan Johar’s films are milestones in the development of a new style in
Hindi cinema. Shahrukh Khan, as their leading male star, has emerged as
a trademark of contemporary Bollywood. One particular aspect of Johar’s
films is intrinsically tied to the transnational and -cultural success
of the actor as well as the director: the gaze. With an intercultural
approach drawing on psychoanalytic conceptions of erotic gazing as well
as the Hindu concept of darshan, this book aims to offer insights into
the dynamic renegotiations of scopic relations, gender roles as well as
culturally constructed filmic codes, resulting in a hybrid style
characteristic of globalization processes.
