Without a strategy to balance out the differences between richer and poorer Member States, social cohesion in the European Union is at risk. Relying solely on the alignment of economic strength will not work. The EU needs a social pillar to go toward fixing the disparities in economic performance. The introduction of a basic income could be this pillar: a means of securing a livelihood for all Europeans, based on solidarity and with as little bureaucracy as possible. The proposal for a ‘Euro Dividend’, put forward by Philippe Van Parijs in 2013, forms the starting point for this collection of articles.
Otto Lüdemann was, until 2006, an educational scientist at HAW Hamburg (University of Applied Sciences) and held the ‘Jean Monnet Chair for European Intercultural Studies’.
He volunteers with the “International Erich Fromm Society”, the “Hamburg Basic Income Network” and the “European Basic Income Network”.
Bernhard Neumärker is Professor of Economic Policy and Director of the Götz Werner Professorship for Economic Policy and New Ordoliberalism at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. In 2019, he founded the Freiburg Institute for Basic Income Studies (FRIBIS) for interfaculty and interdisciplinary research on Unconditional Basic Income in a network of six institutes of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg.
Ulrich Schachtschneider is working both as energy consultant and freelance social scientist. He is investigating into the relationship between basic income andsocial-ecological transformation. He also is Member of Board of UBIE (Unconditional Basic IncomeEurope).
FRIBIS is a competence network at the University of Freiburg. Led by Prof. Dr. Bernhard Neumärker it conducts interdisciplinary research on Basic Income. The board of directors is drawn from the departments of Economic Policy and Order Theory (Götz Werner Professorship), Psychology, Caritas Science (Faculty of Theology), Ethnology, Computer Science and Educational Science. The FRIBIS matrix consists of international, multi-topic FRIBIS teams composed of advocates of basic income and academics in the field who research and publicly discuss Basic Income from various interdisciplinary and international perspectives.
