Today’s Republic of Austria is a child of the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye of 1919. This peace treaty after the First World War, and later the State Treaty of Vienna in 1955, made it impossible for Austria to maintain powerful armed forces due to military restrictions. Chronic lack of money and the resulting austerity measures did the rest. An operation against its own population in 1934 was the low point. There were very few real high points, such as the deployment to protect the borders in 1991 against Yugoslavia during Slovenia’s fight for independence. Over its more than 100-year history, the Austrian Armed Forces thus became a necessary evil.
