The guiding question for this book is: Should leaders become role models or idols or both or neither? The theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer had a clear opinion on this: “If the leader tries to become the idol the led are looking for – something the led always hope from their leader – then the image of the leader shifts to one of a misleader” (Radio message, 1 Feb. 1933).
This book presents interesting case studies from Africa, America, Europe, spanning various disciplines and time periods. It does not provide quick-fix approaches but invites reflective practitioners and scholars alike to dig deeper. It grew out of an inspiring leadership conference held in Budapest, September 2024.
